Project RESPECT is a joint offering of the Onondaga County Probation Department and New Justice Services, Inc. This pro-social skills training program is for adjudicated youth ages 12-16, along with a parent/guardian. The program is occurs in four-phases that last over a five-week period. Phase I (Intake/Orientation): This is an opportunity to introduce the requirements of the program to the youth. Topics covered include: class expectations, requirements, and guidelines. All referred youth will sign a participation agreement at this time. Phase II (Training and Education): This is an extensive and comprehensive training, which will total 15 hours extending the five week period for the youth. The adult will be involved in a similar training, which will total 5 hours over a five week period. The content covered during this time is, but not limited to:
- Conflict Resolution
- Communication Skills
- Anger Management
- Problem Solving
Awareness is created and skill developed through self-exploration, facilitated discussion, skill streaming, and role play. Phase III (Optional Mediation Session): The goal is for the youth and adult to establish an agreement around issues such as:
- Chores
- School Work
- Behavior
- Recreation
- Ect.
Phase IV (Follow-Up Assistance): Understanding the transference of behavior is impossible without ongoing support, referrals and follow-up assistance will be provided.
