Onondaga County  -  Operation SNUG

Operation S.N.U.G. is a Community, Government & Corporate Partnership aimed at improving Public Safety for our youths and young adults through the elimination of gun and gang violence.  This multi-faceted approach to the increase in violence amongst our youth in New York State is being sponsored tri-laterally by Congress, the NYS Senate & Assembly and the NYC Council.  Operation S.N.U.G. was authorized by NYS Senate Minority Leader Malcolm A. Smith and is being implemented by various sub-committees that have been established to provide services to at-risk, gang involved and out of school youths by offering a variety of alternatives to violence and incarceration.

OUR PURPOSE IS TO:

  • Address the root causes of violence and develop viable solutions to address problems that continue to have a detrimental affect on our communities.
  • Provide community members with the information, tools, skills, and the network necessary to access and utilize existing prevention and intervention resources effectively, as well as to troubleshoot everyday situations and conflicts peacefully.
  • Raise awareness around the state of youth crime, violence, and incarceration - recent trends, issues, and findings - as well as the existing solutions, alternatives, best practices, and community resources related to these problems.
  • Develop youth leadership among at-risk and youth-involved youth through a series of leadership training academies to orient them towards successful employment and/or matriculation at local colleges and/or workforce development sites.
  • Work with key community stakeholders and elected offcials to develop policies for crime prevention/intervention and community safety that are premised on positive police-community relations, community development and empowerment, and long-term investment towards a decrease in the juvenile detention/incarceration and recidivism rate.
  • Submit policy recommendations to state legislators that reflect the findings and the agreed upon solutions to the numerous issues and challenges identified during the ongoing fact finding activities of S.N.U.G.
